When products are sealed with inert gas, it can happen that individual packages are not completely airtight, this can be easily, quickly and reliably avoided before they reach the customer. These leaks are usually in the micro range and cannot always be detected with conventional testing methods such as the water bath. With our leak testers, it is possible a non-destructively check of the package tightness immediately after sealing.

With our leak testers, it is possible a non-destructively check of the package tightness immediately after sealing.
 
 

How it works

The package is tested by simply placing it in the vacuum chamber. The automatic test cycle starts when the lid is closed. The unit generates a user-defined vacuum during this process. After the vacuum is reached, the sensor is set to the “virtual” zero point. If the CO2 concentration rises during the measuring time that now begins and was previously selected by the user, this indicates that the packaging is leaking. The measured increase of the CO2 content in ppm gives information about the size of the not tightly sealed area.
The sensor demonstrably detects even the smallest leaks up to approx. 10 µm. (µm is a micrometre and corresponds to 0.001 millimetres)
As our sensor is installed directly in the chamber, the accuracy and response time are unquestionable fast. A detected leak is immediately visually displayed to the user on the easy-to-read touch screen and stored in the database. (Data evaluation OPC, CSV)
A CO2 content of approx. 20% in the packaging is sufficient to obtain reliable results.
Depending on the size of the packaging and the test chamber size, several packaging units up to the size of an E2 box (60 x 40 x 20 cm) or larger can be tested for leakage. The methodology and the design of the vacuum chamber make it possible to test both flexible and rigid packaging.
In the case of small leaks, multiple testing is possible, which makes sorting out the leaking packages from large containers such as the contents of an E2 box or the final packaging (cardboard boxes) an uncomplicated check that can be carried out at any time.
Even tests with products after several days are possible if the gas added to the product has not yet escaped from the package. Due to the controlled vacuum created, freshly glued outer packaging such as cartons are not damaged during the test.
For example, foodstuffs such as spreads, cheese or sausage packed in inert gas can be tested in the same way, but also cans or cartons with products such as powdered milk.
Tests in a production environment with an increased O2 concentration of more than 5000 ppm are also possible with a modification directly on the packaging machine.

Function Leak Tester In-Line IS 5
The Leak Tester In-Line has the same features as the Leak Tester.
The measuring procedure for detecting a leak is the same.
The difference is that the packages are automatically moved into the test chamber and this automatically carries out the test procedure.
Furthermore, the product is automatically guided out of the chamber onto an associated belt.
If there is no leakage, this is also indicated by a green signal lamp (on the SS housing of the panel PC).
If there is a leak, this is indicated by a red signal lamp.
The product is then tipped off the conveyor belt.
The leak tester has a touch screen for easy operation. The special programme ensures an automatic individually pre-programmed test sequence.
The cycles per minute are due to the process validation, eight measurements are realistic for the smallest packages.
Faster cycles are possible but lead to measurement errors. To reduce its failure rate to a minimum, time is simply needed for testing.
The system stores all results in a format that can be edited, saved and printed with common spreadsheet programs.
Industrial control with OPC UA server for data communication
Test results or product settings can only be made, deleted or changed by previously defined administrators.
The printed results can be attached to the packaging as batch documentation and serve as proof in accordance with ISO 9000.
